Ask a New York Times critic and you are told that the music director and the orchestra give too many subpar performances. In part, that is because the music director was able to shape the orchestra personnel and sound. No one should be arguing for going back to the bad old days of poor pay for orchestra musicians. But for other musicians, organizations will demand more as the world in which they will operate changes.
