The arrested officials have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tauqeer Hussain, Head Constable Mehboob Khan and Constable Qasim. Prisoner Hamad, who was facing several serious criminal cases, had been brought from Jhelum Jail to a court in Rawalpindi. The escape allegedly took place while he was being taken back after the court proceedings. Police said some officials and associates of the prisoner had allegedly planned the escape in advance and shifted Hamad into a private vehicle. When Mandra police received information and attempted to intercept the vehicle, the fleeing prisoner and his accomplices allegedly opened fire at the police team.
