A community asset transfer bid from St Patrick’s Sports Academy which sought to take over the pitches at Burnhead Park, known locally as the Gala Day pitches, has been successful, with agreement from North Lanarkshire Council. The club seeks to establish a permanent home at the site, strengthening the club as a central hub for players of all ages while also providing opportunities for other sports. These plans also include work promoting girls’ football, as well as people with additional needs with the creation of a walking football team. The group’s proposals were assessed favourably by senior council officials although further assurances around funding and financial projections are desired. The club will pay £20,000 for the pitches, a significantly lower price than the council’s own valuation, but this discount is considered justifiable due to the potential community benefits of the proposals.
