CIP’s 500 MW Coalburn 1 Battery Starts Commercial Operation in the UKCopenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has brought its 500 MW/1,000 MWh Coalburn 1 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, into commercial operation, making it one of Europe’s largest operational battery projects.
The project is designed to store surplus renewable electricity and release it during periods of demand, improving grid flexibility, supporting renewable integration and strengthening UK energy security.
