The Super Falcons of Nigeria will renew their fierce rivalry with Banyana Banyana of South Africa on Thursday as both teams battle for a place in the Inter-Confederations Playoff Tournament and a second chance to reach the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Despite Nigeria’s dominance in their overall head-to-head record, South Africa have enjoyed success against the Super Falcons in three Women AFCON editions — 2012, 2018 and 2022. Two years earlier, Banyana Banyana had defeated the Falcons 2-1 in the opening match between the teams at the 2022 Women AFCON in Morocco. Nigeria subsequently recorded victories over Banyana Banyana in several major competitions, including the Women AFCON, African Games and Olympic qualifiers.
