There were four judges — two piping judges, an ensemble judge and drumming judge — and Greighlan Crossing received first place from all four. Inside were his pipe band shoes, shirts, socks and other essentials — along with his sgian dubh, the traditional Scottish knife worn in the sock with formal Highland dress. So, while his suitcase was somewhere between Toronto and Scotland, Buchanan had his bagpipes and enough of his uniform to perform. The real target is the World Pipe Band Championships, where Greighlan Crossing will compete next Saturday, Aug. 15, and the stakes are considerably higher. “We were not overly well-known in Scotland,” Buchanan says.
