HQSouth Korea has decided that the current tech gold rush sparked by the rise of AI is the ideal time to explore new boundaries between reality and what we have hitherto known as 'cyberpunk' fiction.
One of these priorities is a moon landing as part of its space programme by 2030, but it also includes the manufacture of the first small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2035 and research into fusion energy.
Although nuclear energy is a key part of the country's economic growth strategy, there are plans to develop ultra-efficient solar cells, advanced offshore wind technologies, hydrogen production systems and AI-based electricity grid technologies, according to a government press release reported by Reuters.
Ultimately, South Korea's aim is to present a united national strategy, at a time when demographic trends indicate that the country is facing a rapidly ageing workforce and a low birth rate.
"We will help these seeds to grow and build a South Korea that no one will be able to match in 10 or 20 years' time," said Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon.
