GRAND FORKS — With budget planning in full swing for Grand Forks County departments, some costs related to health coverage and treatment for inmates at the Grand Forks County Correctional Center may be adjusted in an effort to save money.
One of the major cuts Sheriff Andy Schneider is proposing for the 2027 budget is to inmate health insurance.
ADVERTISEMENTThe cut doesn’t mean the correctional center will no longer pay for significant health incidents at the jail; instead, it would mean the correctional center would cover costs for those health events and pay for them as they occur.
During a past county meeting, Schneider said the correctional center is providing approximately 600 medications a day to inmates.
Costs for medications and procedures are charged to the inmates, but the county doesn’t often recoup those costs.
