After suspending firefighting efforts because of strong winds in the Ongos area on 11 August, the City of Windhoek on 12 August confirmed that their Emergency Services team resumed firefighting operations and has contained the veld fire in the Ongos area. The City said most of the fire has been contained while teams continue to monitor and extinguish remaining hotspots. “The fire poses no threat to properties or the city currently, and firefighters are also creating firebreaks to prevent the fire from spreading over the C28 road.” They emphasised that there is no cause for alarm at this stage and they will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. “We appreciate the support from farmers, the Namibian Defence Force, the Office of the Governor in the Khomas Region and Shoprite for their valuable assistance, including providing refreshments to firefighters and emergency personnel on the ground.”
