The Surf Ballroom put a bronze star on the Surf District Revitalization Project last Friday, August 7, with the unveiling of the Three Stars bronze statue just in front of the Music Enrichment Center (MEC). The statue features realistic models of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson standing in a circle facing out. Many faces came to see the unveiling, but perhaps none more important that the family of Ritchie Valens, namely his three siblings Connie, Irma and Mario. There were times when I was feeling a little homesick, and I’d be in Clear Lake, and I’d come to the Surf. They’ll draw visitors from around the world, creating new opportunities for local businesses while preserving the history that continues to define Clear Lake.
