Unprecedented images captured by the world's most powerful solar telescope reveal magnetic vortices on the Sun's surface, helping scientists explain the origins of space weather and its effects on Earth. The new observations were made possible by the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope. The images, published alongside a study in the journal Nature, provide the first-ever view of extremely small structures on the Sun's surface that had previously remained beyond the reach of observation. Researchers believe this breakthrough marks an important step toward understanding how space weather is generated and improving its forecasting. David Kuridze, also of the NSO, explained that these twisting motions generate magnetic energy that can accumulate over time before being released explosively.
