Scientists have an official name for the monster that chased her home to New York in terror — Halley’s Comet. Although, there were certainly some who insisted comet arrivals brought with them destructive supernatural and natural disasters. Perhaps the best illustration of this “don’t worry, but probably worry” tactic was the Pittsburgh Press’ March 27, 1910 headline that screamed, “Blazing Comet Monster Approaches; Scientists Say, ‘Don’t Get Scared!’” Above it was an illustration of the Earth being destroyed by the comet. With constant fear-stoking being tacked on to science-based reassurances, it’s no wonder the public indeed went a little “crazy” by the time the comet arrived in mid-May.
