Eighty-one years after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, UNI Global Union remembers the hundreds of thousands of people killed and injured and honours the atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha, who have carried the physical and emotional consequences throughout their lives. In November 2010, more than 2,000 trade unionists from around the world gathered in the city for the Third UNI World Congress. From a city that had experienced the catastrophic consequences of nuclear war, the Congress pledged its support for the abolition of nuclear weapons and lasting peace. As a member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, UNI Global Union continues to call for the universalisation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and renewed international action on disarmament.
