The Federal Aviation Administration is developing a new helicopter route chart for the Las Vegas terminal area in its latest attempt to shore up airspace safety following last year’s midair collision near Washington, D.C.“There is no helicopter chart for Las Vegas,” said Steve Szukala, the FAA’s director of aeronautical information services, at a July 8 Transportation Research Board (TRB) meeting. It has yet to develop an entirely new helicopter route chart for any airspace as a part of these evaluations, making Las Vegas the first. “The initiative to evaluate Las Vegas helicopter routing stems from a broader national safety review of helicopter operations and airspace,” an FAA spokesperson told Vertical, not commenting on an expected timeline for the new chart to be released. “Las Vegas air traffic managers are working with local controllers, military and helicopter operators to develop new routes via updated Letters of Agreement (LOAs),” the spokesperson added. The addition of a helicopter route chart could help enhance the safety of operations in Las Vegas, where a slew of air tour helicopters operate in close proximity to the bustling Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).
