In 2010, then-House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher became the first woman to win a major-party endorsement for Minnesota governor. No Republican woman had made it to the general election as the party's nominee. Republican convention delegates endorsed Kendall Qualls over Demuth this spring, but she continued to the primary and prevailed, becoming the first Republican woman nominated for governor in Minnesota. Demuth became the first woman to lead the Minnesota House Republican caucus and later the first Republican woman and first person of color to serve as House speaker.
