The latest version covers 316.7 hectares, with the plantation itself limited to 259.7 hectares after the Alentejo regional development commission excluded a further 35.47 hectares containing protected habitats and species. The ICNF acknowledged that converting forest into farmland could damage protected habitats and species in the Comporta-Galé conservation zone. It has also warned of the cumulative effects of intensive agriculture and the need to protect public water supplies. Objections focused on groundwater consumption, the destruction or degradation of protected habitats, intensive farming within a Natura 2000 area and the effects of anti-frost fans on noise levels and wildlife. These include permanently excluding the most environmentally sensitive areas, conducting new surveys for protected habitats and species, and continuously monitoring surface water and groundwater.
