Rome Committee Votes to Honor Roland Hayes With Museum Exhibit, Stops Short of Apology
['Staff Reports']
Coosa Valley News
The committee met August 6 in the Carnegie Training Room to discuss a request from Russell McClanahan concerning an incident involving Hayes and the Rome Police Department in July 1942.
Chairman Commissioner Craig McDaniel presented committee members with a collection of newspaper articles detailing the incident and Hayes’ life.
McClanahan’s request called on the City of Rome to formally acknowledge what he described as a wrong committed against the Hayes family by Rome police and issue a written apology.
The request called for the apology to be presented to the family by the Rome police chief.
Rather than issuing an apology, Robinson made a motion for the City Manager’s Office to work with the Rome Area History Museum to develop an exhibit dedicated to Hayes’ life and accomplishments.
