A 'large hole' has resulted in part of a town centre road being closed. Now a closure remains in place along part of Brook Lane. A spokesperson said: "Following an initial inspection, engineers uncovered a large hole beneath the road surface, exposing several connecting pipes beneath the carriageway of Brook Lane. Councillor Patrick Allen, cabinet support member for highways north at the county council, said: "Our highways engineers are currently investigating a large hole that has appeared under the A519 in Newcastle town centre. To make sure the investigation work can be carried out safely, temporary traffic lights and a lane closure have been put in place.
