At the heart of the approach is a chemically synthesized sugar molecule that mimics a structure on the surface of C. auris. From Sugar Molecule to Vaccine CandidateTo enable the immune system to specifically recognize this particular sugar structure, the sugar was linked to a carrier protein. The combination of sugar and protein is called a glycoconjugate and helps trigger a targeted immune response against the sugar structure. The Same Sugar Enables Both Therapy and DiagnosisThe researchers also developed an antibody that specifically recognizes the sugar structure.
