A poll ran by the News & Star on the Cumbria Data Drop Facebook group asked readers whether they are in favour of a so called "tourist tax" in the Lake District National Park. It is understood that, if imposed, it would involve a levy, added onto overnight stays in the Lake District. The potential for a tourism levy also sparked debate on a Lake District Facebook group recently. Candidates in the forthcoming mayoral election are divided on whether a visitor levy would be a good thing for Cumbria. Liberal Democrat candidate Libby Bateman says it is not a binary choice between imposing a tourist tax or not but she does not think a pan-Cumbria visitor levy would work.
