The Swiss swimmer came into this meet as the reigning World Championships silver medalist after clocking 22.51 last summer, just 0.03 seconds behind Frenchman Maxime Grousset.
He hit the wall on a slightly short stroke, taking 21 strokes in total over the 50.
Ponti rebounded in the 100 fly heats this morning, leading the field with a new season best of 50.47.
Ponti is not the first high-level swimmer to lose their goggles in a major final this decade.
