XGN/X1 Mobile and Tyche Media LLC asked the FCC to authorize voluntary use of the 3GPP 5G Broadcast standard for LPTV stations, saying the move would modernize LPTV service while strengthening public‑safety capabilities.
The Aug. 10 petition for rulemaking urged the FCC to begin a formal proceeding.
“The FCC should launch a rulemaking to make this model a permanent fixture of the FCC’s regulations,” said Frank Copsidas, CEO of XGN / X1 Mobile and Chairman of the LPTV Broadcasters Association.
