For most cross country teams, the graduation of the state’s all-time best distance runner after a run of four consecutive team state championships would mean the end of a dynasty and a new era for a program. But for the Pella girls, this run of unprecedented success seems like it will continue for the foreseeable future, thanks in part to avoiding a focus on winning those accolades. The Dutch girls cross country team returns five of the seven athletes who competed at Fort Dodge last October, and an incoming group of freshmen will likely add to the depth of the four-time defending champs this season. Head Coach Doug Cutler stresses the “Drive for Five” means more than pursuit of a fifth title win — it’s about developing a strong team of athletes beyond the postseason roster and a love for the culture and process of running. Pella’s 2026 roster includes multiple-time All-State athletes Elsie Brenneman, Ruth Dunham, Lizzy VandeVoort, and Carleigh Altwine, with Dana McCulla also returning from the state team.
