A major clean-up at St George’s Bay has seen a whopping 128kg of waste removed from the popular beach and its surrounding waters. A team of just 15 people armed themselves with snorkels, gloves and plenty of determination before taking to both land and sea to tackle the rubbish that had accumulated around the bay. And they found quite the haul. Among the waste collected were cigarette butts, discarded vapes and bottles of all shapes and sizes, highlighting just how much rubbish can build up in one of Malta’s busiest coastal areas. The initiative was organised by Italian marine biologist Laura Piredda together with Maltese environmental NGO Żibel, with funding from German non-profit MBRC the Ocean Foundation.
