Head coach of the athletics team of Team Nigeria to the just-ended 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Solomon Aliyu, has insisted that gold medals alone should not be used as the yardstick for assessing the team’s performance at the Games.
Despite the Nigerian athletics team returning with fewer medals than in previous editions, Aliyu, still praised the athletes for their performances.
“What would you say about an athlete who produced an impressive performance but did not win a medal?
Aliyu maintained that the team’s overall performance met the expectations of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), despite falling short of its gold medal target.
The coach also revealed that disruptions to the team’s camping and training programme affected their preparations ahead of the Games.
