A 20-year-old tourist plunged to his death at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon.
Zachary Nicholas Mertens of Burlington, Ky., died after he slipped and fell from the top of South Falls waterfall at around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10.
Mertens had "accessed a closed area to pose for photographs" before he fell approximately 177 feet below, the Oregon State Police said in a press release.
Another visitor rushed to help Mertens and attempted to revive him with CPR before emergency responders arrived, as reported by The Statesman Journal.
The incident was "a pretty horrific accident" and a "very tough situation," former Silver Falls State Park manager and current regional manager Chris Gilliand told The Statesman Journal.
