On Wednesday, August 12, the Moon will obscure around 91% of the Sun as seen from Glasgow in a deep partial solar eclipse – the most significant solar event visible from the UK since 1999. The best viewing spots in and around Glasgow include Cathkin Braes, the Queen’s Park flagpole, Kelvingrove Park and Hamiltonhill Claypits. Glasgow is not in the path of totality, but the effect is still expected to be striking. The UK will not see another total solar eclipse until 2090, when the best view will be from south-west England. Use certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312‑2 standard, checking before use that they are not scratched, punctured or otherwise damaged.
