Wealthier areas must take greater share of housing asylum seemers, says PM

Prime Minister Andy Burnham made the call during an interview with GB News, as the government faces criticism over plans to use a former military base in nearby Bicester to accommodate asylum seekers.
Mr Burnham said: "We cannot have a situation where it's only the poorest communities in the country that receive all of the dispersal of refugees and asylum seekers."
The focus has now shifted to facilities such as barracks, former industrial sites, and student halls, drawing criticism from both residents and politicians.
Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, rejected Mr Burnham’s argument and said: "We shouldn't be housing illegal immigrants anywhere – wealthy or not."
The government maintains that former military sites are preferable to hotels and ensure services and security can be delivered on a larger scale, reducing the impact on surrounding communities.
