SIKESTON — For Dessie Gross, creating art has never been primarily about winning awards or selling paintings. The Anniston resident’s artwork is featured in an exhibit titled “Creations of the Heart” at the Sikeston Depot Museum and Cultural Center. Many pieces in the Depot exhibit reflect Southeast Missouri agriculture, Gross’ family, and her strong patriotism. That piece, created in 1999, received Best of Show and First Place honors during a Sikeston Art League event held near the Depot. “Ministers preach, but artists draw and paint what they are and what they see and what they know,” Gross said.
