West Norfolk Council has agreed plans to convert two of the buildings close to Bleak House, where Mr Martin turned his unlicensed shotgun on 16-year-old Fred Barras in August, 1999. His death sparking a national debate over how much force householders could use to defend their homes. The proposals were submitted by Jacqui and David Wadsley, to whom Mr Martin left his £2.5m estate including the farm at Emneth Hungate, near Wisbech, after he passed away at the age of 80 in February, 2025. They include turning two buildings into four homes, comprising two four-bedroom houses, one three-bedroom home and one five-bedroom property. The farm was owned by Mr Martin, who made headlines in 1999 for fatally shooting Mr Barras and wounding his accomplice Brendan Fearon.
