A student project featuring a viral antisemitic meme has been removed from display at Sydney’s Knox Grammar School after staff became aware of its meaning. “Our understanding is that they were attempting to use a trending social media meme without appreciating its broader connotations,” the spokesperson said. Michael Gencher, executive director of StandWithUs Australia, told news.com.au the Knox image used an antisemitic trope but stressed that this did not mean the students themselves were antisemitic. Gencher said the students’ apparent lack of awareness demonstrated how easily antisemitic material was being absorbed and repeated online. The incident shows how antisemitic material can spread through social media as humour or memes and be repeated by young people who do not necessarily recognise the stereotypes behind it.
