‘Ridiculous’ for council to call pedestrian crossing safe, councillor says

Councillor Steve Holes, who sits on Eastleigh Borough Council, said Hampshire County Council’s (HCC) reliance on recorded injury-collision data ignored the repeated near misses reported at the Portsmouth Road crossing.
Cllr Holes said: “The county council simply waved away the lack of injuries – or worse – as evidence that the crossing is safe.
CCTV still of Juliet Mayne with her two daughters and her daughter's friend at the crossing in Portsmouth Road on August 5, 2026.
“It’s ridiculous and irresponsible for HCC to say it’s safe because no one has been seriously injured or worse.
They added: “The council has limited resources and therefore must focus these on road safety improvements at locations where evidence shows that measures will reduce incidents and have the greatest impact.”
