Clare College, Cambridge, has issued a content warning ahead of a discussion of the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, alerting participants to “adult content” and “themes of violence”. Official course materials stated: “Content warning: Please note this session will involve discussion of some adult content including themes of violence, with reference to fairytales.” The warning is the latest example of content advisories applied to literary material at Cambridge. In previous years university students have received similar notices for Shakespeare plays such as Titus Andronicus, flagged for discussions of sexual violence, and for Greek tragedy including Euripides’ The Bacchae. Arday resigned with immediate effect hours later, giving up his chair in the sociology of education and his fellowship at Jesus College.
