22-year-old goalie Carla Heaton, who played for both Swindon Town and Cirencester Town Ladies, died by suicide on November 21, 2022, after having been sectioned as a patient at the Sandalwood Court psychiatric facility in Swindon, where she had been receiving care for more than two months.
The footballer, nursery worker and writer had experienced multiple mental health struggles before developing violent tics that became debilitating.
An eight-day jury inquest being held at Wiltshire & Swindon Coroner's Court will now consider whether potential failings in relation to Carla’s care whilst on the psychiatric ward contributed to her death.
“I welcome the opportunity for the jury to consider the circumstances around Carla’s death and treatment while admitted to Applewood Ward.
