For communities that have lived alongside mining operations for more than three decades, the emphasis on local employment is significant. According to the communities, DGML has completed the design of the proposed facility, and initial earthworks have commenced. The communities consider the road network strategically important because it connects mining communities to other population and commercial centres. Their demands have included increased local employment, stronger community participation, improved infrastructure, support for local businesses, and a more consistent mechanism for dialogue with mine management. The early experience at Damang has also strengthened community support for greater indigenous participation in Ghana’s mining industry.
