Herman Nordby watches as golden wheat flows from the combine to a truck for delivery in this photo published in the July 6, 1951, Lewiston Tribune.
Nordby farmed in Nez Perce County on the Lewiston Hill, and was planning to take this first 1951 wheat of the region to the Lewiston Grain Growers Inc. mill in Lewiston, according to the photo caption.
Five acres had yielded 203 bushels and Nordby “estimated that the 90-acre field will average 40 bushels an acre of golden variety.”
Combining is scheduled to be started by other growers in the early belt about July 10.
