The Kenyan government is set to import one million 90-kilogram bags of maize to boost the country’s strategic reserves amid growing concerns over a looming supply shortage. Kagwe projected that Kenya could face a shortage of 5.4 million bags of maize by the end of next month, raising concerns over food security and the potential impact on prices. Kenya consumes between 50 million and 60 million 90-kilogram bags of maize annually, making the crop one of the country’s most important food staples. However, local production remains below national demand, with farmers producing between 34 million and 42 million bags in a typical year. The latest import plan is expected to provide some relief by increasing government-held stocks and ensuring the country has adequate reserves in case local supplies fall below consumption requirements.
