Shafaqna English- Andras Baka, a former Supreme Court president, was elected Hungary’s next president by parliament on Tuesday(11 Aug 2026). This was a symbolic move in Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s campaign to dismantle the power bases of his predecessor Viktor Orban. Baka won the largely symbolic presidency with backing from the ruling centre-right Tisza party, while Fidesz opposition members abstained by not taking part in the election.
