The purpose of the new structure is to improve storage facilities for the long-running Grasmere Sports event. The existing structures are described in the LDNPA planning officer's report as "of a non-traditional character and appearance". The Lake District National Park Authority described the current containers and sheds as visually 'untidy' and said they detract from the conservation area. These include the installation of an underground soakaway, details of which will need to be agreed with the planning authority before work begins. Other conditions attached to the permission require the removal of all existing containers, fencing, and lean-to structures within 12 months of substantial completion.
