Network Rail closed the road at the rail bridge in April 2023 for work associated with a major scheme to upgrade Oxford station. The road was due to reopen to traffic on August 31 but following gas leaks close to the rail bridge the reopening was delayed until September 20. An Environment Agency boat struck a water pipe underneath Osney Bridge in April 2021 and Thames Water has been carrying out repairs on site ever since. City councillor Susanna Pressel has lobbied Thames Water over the years to complete its work at the bridge. "It is completely unclear why it has taken Thames Water so long to replace their water main."
