Tom was brought up at Broad Chalke, near Salisbury, where his brother, historian and podcaster James, organises the renowned Chalke Valley History Festival. A reputed historian, he shot to fame when he began hosting The Rest is History with fellow historian Dominic Sandbrook in 2020. The Campaign to Protect Rural England - originally the Council for the Preservation of Rural England - was founded in 1926 in response to a fast, weakly regulated building boom in the 1920s. As a non-statutory planning consultee, CPRE is a constant voice in major planning matters in Swindon and Wiltshire.
