The Union Health Ministry reports over 23,000 job positions are empty across 28 major hospitals and medical institutions. AIIMS New Delhi has the highest vacancies with nearly 3,000 posts unfilled. Other major hospitals also face significant shortages. For example, RML Hospital saw a drop from 4,093 in 2021-22 to 3,152 in 2025-26. MP V.Sivadasan highlighted the impact of these vacancies on healthcare services and urged the government to create new posts based on hospital needs and fill existing ones quickly.
