Modo Energy has run the numbers and analysed the National Energy System Operator’s (NESO) demand forecast. NESO has forecast a loss of around 1.1 GW of solar – and a corresponding increase in needed transmission, Modo noted. The energy consultants predict the eclipse could reduce embedded solar generation by an average of 1.8 GW between 7 pm and 7:30 pm. Octopus Energy is leaning into the power reduction by calling for its customers to use less power during the eclipse. Iceland and Greenland will lose more irradiance, although solar generation capacity is also much lower.
