The Scottish government will increase funding for community renewable energy projects to £15 million this year. Made available through the Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES), the money will be made available for clean energy projects including onshore wind and solar, as well as installing heat pumps and solar panels. In addition to funding, CARES provides advice to communities looking to develop renewable energy, heat decarbonisation and energy efficiency projects. Scottish government funding for local energy projects will be complemented by £2m per year from The National Lottery Community Fund. For the UK as a whole, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and state energy company GB Energy set aside up to £1 billion to help local and community energy projects.
