Two schoolboys who were preyed upon by “depraved” James Donaldson had been interviewed by police in the mid-1990s as part of the murder inquiry. Lawyers for the 60-year-old lodged police paperwork from that time period to the Appeal Court in Edinburgh as part of a bid to quash their client’s lifelong restriction order (OLR). Donaldson’s lawyers argued it was not competent to impose an OLR for the charges dating from the 1990s. The report states: “During the course of the enquiry it has emerged that the accused has been sexually abusing witnesses and others.” The judge also dismissed lawyers’ claims that the OLR was excessive, citing a report by consultant clinical and forensic psychologist Lorraine Johnstone.
