Kenyan govt to cross KSh 5 trillion spending in new Treasury budget proposal

Kenya is set to cross a historic spending milestone, with the National Treasury proposing a KSh 5.323 trillion budget for the 2027/28 financial year — the first time in the country's history that national expenditure has exceeded the KSh 5 trillion mark.
Treasury has projected a budget of KSh 5.3 trillion in the 2027/28 FY.
How the Budget Is StructuredRecurrent expenditure dominates the spending plan, projected at KSh 3.887 trillion, or approximately 73% of the total budget.
On the revenue side, Treasury projects total receipts, including Appropriations-in-Aid, at KSh 3.943 trillion, representing 17.1% of GDP.
In FY 2025/26, total revenue reached KSh 3.199 trillion against expenditure of KSh 4.484 trillion, producing a deficit of KSh 1.265 trillion, or 6.8% of GDP.
