KIDNAPPING is fast becoming a long-running epidemic in Nigeria, but the fact that kidnappers have moved from abducting the living to abducting dead bodies has worsened the situation. According to reports, armed men suspected to be kidnappers abducted the remains of the late Deputy Corps Commander and the mourners accompanying the body while en route to Ikwue’s hometown in Otukpo, Benue State. The vehicle conveying the corpse ran into an ambush along the Ochadamu-Ejule road in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, after which the kidnappers demanded ransom to the tune of N450 million. The highways are largely in bad shape and generally left unpoliced, thus making them a dangerous haven for kidnappers. Many are now forced to make extra plans before conveying corpses to their hometowns.
