Microsoft says a software update fixing the bug behind a 16-hour Xbox outage in late July is now rolling out and will become mandatory for all users by August 17, 2026.
During that window, players across Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S could not sign in, view their full game libraries, or launch titles they had already purchased, including disc-based games.
Van Vliet said the outage stemmed from two compounding failures.
The first was a breakdown in a shared licensing service, sitting outside the core Xbox division, that Xbox depends on to verify sign-ins and confirm ownership of purchased games and Game Pass titles.
