He spoke of “safety” and “freedom” for Iranians, language that implicitly included Iranian women — women whose long struggle had captured the world’s imagination with the Woman Life Freedom protests of 2022. That manipulation of a cause has been taken a step further in the use of the Women Life Freedom slogan to justify war. Iranian women told reporters exactly this in the first weeks of the current war. The war has contributed to putting more women and dissidents on death row, not fewer, and has priced women out of work and out of public life.
