Peggy Flanagan won the DFL primary for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, defeating U.S. Rep. Angie Craig in a contest that pitted her appeal to the party's progressive base against Craig's claim of moderate electability. She came up in the DFL's progressive wing, working for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone and later campaigned to increase Minnesota's minimum wage. On the campaign trail, Flanagan enthusiastically embraced progressive policies and allies, including Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Sen. Tina Smith, who currently holds the seat. Flanagan said again and again that voters are "sick and tired of Democrats who are fighting from a defensive crouch." In the final weeks of the campaign, Flanagan sought to turn Craig's fundraising advantage into a liability, accusing her of being bought and paid for by big donors and corporate interests.
